Paperboard is a paper-based material with thickness that allows for foldability and rigidity. It is made with hardword, softwood, recycled materials, or fibers from sugarcane bagasse and hemp using a chemical or mechanical pulping process. Hardwood fibers allows for proper formation, and softwood fibers provides strength. It is a combination of different materials at different ratios that result in different paperboard grades.

While many refer to paperboard as any type of thick paper, the paperboard grades discussed below pertain to folding cartons. Paperboard for folding cartons is typically 12 pt or thicker.
