Petroleum-based plastics, as the name implies, are derived from petroleum or natural gas. These plastics are widely used due to its durability, affordability, and lightweight qualities.

Despite it's beneficial attributes, the production of petroleum-based plastics has a detrimental impact on the environment. The energy-intensive process of extracting and refining petroleum and natural gas produces greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change. Additionally, these plastics are not biodegradable, which means they can persist in the environment for hundreds of years. When they are not disposed of properly, they can contribute to environmental pollution and harming wildlife.
